A Short History of Sloane Square
Sitting in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, Sloane Square was named after Sir Hans Sloane whose heirs were the landowners in the 1770s. The square itself was designed by Henry Holland Snr and his son, Henry Holland Jnr and it is a boundary between the two biggest aristocratic estates in London – the Grosvenor and the Cadogan.
In the years before the Square was constructed, to make the ¾ mile journey from Knightsbridge to the King’s Road meant a trek over marshy fields and getting dangerously close to what was known as Five Fields. Five Fields was home to highwaymen and brigands and what is now the eastern corner of Sloane Square once sat ‘Bloody Bridge’, so called because of the propensity for robbery and murder there.
Originally, the development covering Sloane Square, Sloane Street and Hans Place (as well as many other streets) was called Hans Town and while the original Georgian mansions have now been superseded by later developments, a few remain, including 123 Sloane Street and novelist Jane Austen lived nearby at number 64 while she wrote Sense & Sensibility.
Today, Sloane Square and the surrounding area is a haven for the wealthy. A seven-bedroom townhouse in nearby Eaton Square is available for £55m and even a three-bedroom house here will cost the business end of £10.
