A Short History of Gloucester Road
Sitting in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, Gloucester Road runs north to south between Kensington Gardens and Old Brompton Road. Gloucester Road was so named for Maria, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh who constructed a residence there in 1805. In the seventeenth century until around 1850 when it was renamed it was called Hog Moore Lane because it was a ‘lane through marshy ground where hogs are kept.’
The area is home to a proliferation of pubs, restaurants and hotels and perhaps the area’s most famous building is St Stephen’s Church, a Grade II listed Anglican church built in 1867 by Joseph Peacock, described by accounts of the time as an ‘extremely individual’ church architect. The church’s most celebrated worshipper was American poet TS Eliot who converted to Anglicanism from Unitarianism in 1927 (the same year he took British citizenship) and became a warden of St Stephen’s.
Today, Gloucester Road is one of London’s more affluent areas (2-bed apartments can fetch £900,000 and the biggest 5-6 bed townhouses are north of £5m) and is home to a number of embassies and consulates including those of Bahrain, Korea and Zambia. For literary fans, Gloucester Road was home (25b Froxbury Court) to John Mortimer’s fictional barrister Horace Rumpole, of Rumpole of the Bailey fame.
