West London Highlights…

West London is a catch-all term taking in the London boroughs of Brent, Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, Harrow, Hillingdon, Hounslow and Richmond-upon-Thames. With so much on offer it’s no wonder people come from all over the world to stay in the area.

First up is Chelsea, a hotbed of high-class entertainment, dining and shopping. There are a number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Chelsea, including Nathan Outlaw’s Outlaw at the Capital and the first Indian chef to be awarded a coveted star, Vineet Bhatia’s Rasoi. There are restaurants, cafés and bars to suit all tastes and budgets but the real draw is the shopping – King’s Road and Sloane Street are havens for the style-savvy visitor and you will find every designer you could wish for.

The Collingham itself is in the heart of west London, in South Kensington – one of London’s most fashionable areas. High Street Kensington has a fantastic mix of designer stores, high street fashion chains and a heady mix of cool and quirky independent shops. We’re also close to the world-famous Natural History, Science and Victoria & Albert Museums as well as the Olympia London Exhibition Centre.

Just up the river is Richmond-upon-Thames, one of the most picturesque riverside towns in the UK and a great place to visit. In fact, there is an Act of Parliament that was specifically drawn up to protect the views of the river from Richmond!

The area is full of green spaces as well as a whole host of great pubs, bars and restaurants. Its royal roots can be traced back to the building of Richmond Palace by Henry VII (who was the Earl of Richmond, and whose ancestral home was Richmond Castle in Yorkshire, hence the name of the west London town) in around 1501. It replaced an early manor house on the site.

Richmond Palace was one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourite homes (she died there in 1603) and it stayed a royal residence until 1649 when Charles I died. Within a few months it was sold for the princely sum of £13,000 and was demolished, bit by bit, over the next decade. The wood and stone was re-used elsewhere, and today only vestigial remains survive.

One of the most amazing sights (arguably in all of London) is Richmond Park. The biggest of all the royal parks, it has had honour after honour bestowed upon it. It is a national nature reserve, a Site of Specific Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation as well as being home to the Royal Ballet School.

The park is most famous for its deer. There are 630 Red and Fallow deer roaming free and they have done since 1529. They are one of the truly wondrous sights in London but a word of warning – keep at least 50 metres away and make sure you don’t come between a mother and her calf or between two rutting stags!

Close to Richmond Park you’ll find Kew Gardens, or to give it it’s proper name, the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew. Consistently popular with guests at the Collingham – being as we are one of the leading family-friendly holiday apartments in west London – it makes for a great day out with the kids. It was founded in 1759 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. It houses the world’s largest collection of living plants with around 30,000 examples and the herbarium has well over seven million specimens of preserved plants. It really is a fantastic day out for the whole family including a 200m long treetop walkway and the world-famous Nash Conservatory, the Kew Orangery, the Pagoda and of course the truly magnificent Palm House.

Kew Gardens even has its own police force called the Kew Constabulary. They have the same powers as the Metropolitan Police and the force comprises two sergeants and 12 officers!
