A Short History of Hammersmith
In the Domesday Book, the manor of ‘Fulham’ was divided into two – Hammersmithside and Fulhamside – by a long-buried minor river called the Black Bull Ditch. Hammersmith itself was first mentioned in 1294 as ‘Hamersmyth’, probably derived from ‘ham’ – the village and ‘hythe’ – by the harbour. Experts are relatively confident it has nothing to do with the processing of cold meat.
Fast-forward to the 17th century and the area starts to take shape. The first parish church (which became St. Pail’s) was constructed in the 1660s (rebuilt in 1883) and Hammersmith Bridge, a vital conduit from the south side of the river to the north side and beyond was built across the River Thames in 1827.
The area became famous for the Vineyard Nursery that was established in 1745 by two Scots. Over the next 150 years the market garden was responsible for introducing many new varieties of flower to Britain including the rose tree and the fuchsia but it closed for good in 1897.
Due to the riverside location, Hammersmith flourished during the early years of the 20th century as largescale employment came to the local water-borne industries, but this died down with the introduction of the railways.
One interesting fact about Hammersmith was that during the last year of the Second World War, Field Marshal Montgomery was headquartered at St. Paul’s School. Today, Hammersmith is a key west London centre for employment and commercial activity with a number of high-profile businesses headquartered there.
