Earls Court Serviced Apartments – Perfect for Your Trip to London
Approximately three miles from the centre of London, Earls Court is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. South Kensington is just to the east, West Kensington is to the west, south is Chelsea and Kensington is due north and perhaps the best known landmark is the world-famous art deco Earls Court Exhibition Centre.
Earls Court is an area of extremes. On one hand you will find beautiful residential squares bordered with large stucco-fronted residences, terraced townhouses and red brick mansion flats with prices reaching upwards of £6-7 million. On the other you’ll find a rich and vibrant student and strong Australian ex-pat community (in the 80s the area was called ‘Kangaroo Court’) but over the past 5-10 years, Earls Court has been somewhat gentrified, albeit with a more Bohemian vibe than neighbouring South Kensington and Chelsea.
Because of the rising costs of freehold property and rental accommodation, many visitors to the area are drawn to short-stay holiday apartments in Earls Court because of their proximity to central London and the overall benefits and value you gain against booking a hotel.
History of Earls Court
Like most of the land west of central London, Earls Court was once rural. The land was held by Saxon Thegn Edwin before the Normans invaded and for half a millennium it was presided over by the Vere family, the Earls of Oxford and generations of the family of Aubrey de Vere. In the absence of the de Vere family, it was governed from a manorial courthouse (where Old Manor Yard now stands), hence the name Earls Court.
Much development took place in the area between 1150 and the start of the seventeenth century, when Sir Walter Cope – one of the country’s richest men and interestingly a man incorrectly suspected of involvement with Guy Fawkes’ Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament – built Cope’s Castle, known today as Holland House.
The lordship of the area changed hands frequently – to the Rich family, the Earls of Warwick and Holland and then the Edwardes family – and soon after William Edwardes was created Baron Kensington in 1776, Earls Court developed in the space of a century from essentially a forgotten rural backwater to a vibrant and fast-growing urban suburb of central London.
Again like the majority of the suburbs surrounding central London, the introduction of the tube was the real catalyst for major and quick expansion. In the 25 years after 1867 when the Metropolitan District Railway station (Earl’s Court) was introduced, two churches and 1,200 new homes were built and development continued unabated well into the 20th century.
After the Second World War, there was a mass influx of Polish immigrants and in the 60s a transient population of Australians and New Zealanders used the area as a hub to explore Europe, because it was one of the cheapest areas within a close proximity to central London.
The area still has a reputation as a gathering place for our antipodean cousins and the choice of serviced apartments in Earls Court is growing, but again, like many central London suburbs, property prices are rising very quickly changing the nature of the area.
Earls Court – Everything You Need!
Earls Court is a very social, active area that doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t. Unlike the salubrious nature of South Kensington and Chelsea, there is a ‘reality’ vibe about the area. You’ll find a great selection of traditional English pubs, coffee shops, bars and restaurants dotted around and Earls Court Road has a good mix of independent shops and ubiquitous Starbucks, fast-food joints and .
Moving further into Kensington and Chelsea, the shopping and eating gets more upmarket but for those staying in self-catering Earls Court holiday apartments, there is lots to do and see including cinemas, comedy clubs, music venues and museums.
Travelling Around Earls Court
Very close to the Collingham Apartments are a number of tube stations including Earls Court, Gloucester Road, High Street Kensington and South Kensington and buses are frequent and plentiful, getting you into central London in 20 minutes.
Paddington, Kings Cross St Pancras and Charing Cross mainline terminals are a short taxi or tube journey away from the Collingham and there are TfL Cycle Hire stations dotted around if you feel like cycling around London.
